Nokia Plans to Introduce Windows 8 Tablet by June 2012

Nokia plans to initiate an iPad challenger based on Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system next year, the company’s French partition manager let fall in an interview with newspaper Les Echos. The tablet must launch next summer and would be the first such product from the Finnish phone manufacturer. “In June 2012, we will contain a tablet that runs on Windows 8,” Paul Amsellem told the Parisian every day. The possible launch date of the tablet also gives a suggestion to when Windows 8 would really ship to consumers, as Microsoft is yet to give information’s on the commence schedule for its future OS, besides a fall 2012 mystery.

Amsellem also established Nokia is preparing another high-end Windows Phone 7 device, set to summarize the Nokia Lumia 800, the first phone natural out of the company’s partnership with Microsoft. The Lumia 800 launches at the moment in Europe and is set to reach your destination in the US in early 2012. Using a car analogy, Amsellem told the Lumia 800 was a BMW Series 5, and with the intention of Nokia has in the pipeline a Series 7 equivalent, with better specification. To get a thought of what the higher-end ‘Series 7’ Nokia phone could bring, you can look at a number of the shortcomings of the Lumia 800: the phone does not have a face camera, no 4G, 512MB of RAM and immediately a single-core processor. The flagship representation has been tipped as the Nokia Ace or 900, as Nokia drop some hints and displayed what is supposed to be a depiction of it at the London Design Museum.

Samsung is also scheduling to release a Windows 8 tablet in the second half of 2012, the company announced in previous week. Samsung’s Windows 8 tablet will be a customized edition of the company’s Series 7 schedule, which runs Windows 7. An previous version of a Samsung Windows 8 tablet, known out to press and developers at the make conference in September had a 11.6-inch 1366-by-768 pixel screen, an Intel second-generation Core i5 processor and 4 GB of RAM. The first to obtain their hands on the near the beginning Windows 8 tablet remark it was bulkier than the iPad and most Android tablets, and sharp out the noisy fan inside.

Here’s How Over The Air Updates Will Work In iOS 5

Apple’s latest developer beta of iOS 5 is the first version to be delivered over the air, meaning users don’t have to sync their device with their computer to receive the update.

The update is delivered directly to the device over Wi-Fi. Some have said it will work over 3G too.

Instead of the massive 600 MB (or larger) updates, the over the air updates are much more manageable in size. The current beta version was a little over 100 MB. After the download, the iPhone restarts itself and installs the update.

iOS 5 Beta 4 Brings Over the Air Update to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Apple on Friday released iOS 5 beta 4 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The latest beta release brings the highly anticipated over the air (OTA) delta update to iOS devices.

Apple during WWDC keynote event announced more than 200 new features in iOS 5 but, previewed just 10 key enhancements. The company wants users to truly experience the post-PC era and is finally cutting the cord for iOS devices. With the fifth major release of Apple’s mobile operating system users will be able to sync, transfer data, update their devices and do much more without connecting their device to a computer.

It’s worth noting that when we tried to download the update the iPad alerts the user if the device has less than 50% battery charge. Connecting the device to a power source let us download and update the device. The update was just 128MB for iPod touch as OTA update are released as delta updates.

Downloading the update over 3G is also possible however, given the fact that most carriers offer limited data plans it would probably be better to get the update over WiFi.

We noticed a few error messages while trying to manually check for the update but that may have been due to initial issues in Apple’s server.

Overall, it’s great to see that Apple has been listening to its customers and iOS 5 will certainly help Apple stay in the lead.

Mac OS X Lion: Mac’s Latest Beast, What to Expect

Confusion over Mac OS X Lion release date continues. Official version of Mac OS X 10.1 Lion is around the corner. Apple is about to bring out public version of the Mac OS X update. In a few days, we can begin to download the 4GB Mac OS X Lion from Apple Mac Store.

You may either need to have a high-speed Internet connection or to move to some Apple outlet to download the enormous file.

The process of installing Mac OS X Lion is said to be more comfortable and smoother compared with usual task of operating system installing. According to some beta users of Mac OS X Lion, only 40 minutes are required to install the software update.

Mac OS X Lion is coming with more than 250 new features. They include Apple’s famous video chatting facility FaceTime, multitouch gesture, full screen apps, auto save system, AirDrop and iCloud, Apple’s cloud-based media service.

Anyway, before installing the new Mac OS X Lion, users should keep in mind some basic details. The computer should be ready for the software update with the installation of Mac OS X 10.6.8, a recent version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which was meant to make users ready to accept Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

As well, Apple has launched several tweaks for Mac computers to help install the fresh version of its Mac OS software. Without those tweaks, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will not run on your computers or laptops.

GEEK TO ME: Here’s an easy way to hide Windows update alerts

QUESTION: I’m hoping you can help me to avoid a nuisance that has popped up recently. I’m running MS Vista on a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and it works fairly well. I use Internet Explorer (IE) 8 to connect to the internet. Lately, Windows Update has been wanting me to upgrade to IE 9. I made that mistake three weeks ago. I upgraded to IE 9 and found that I didn’t like it (too radically different). Fortunately, I managed to reconfigure back to IE 8.

Unfortunately, Windows Update keeps “pestering” me to upgrade back to IE 9. By the way, Windows Update considers this an “Important” update; I consider it more of a convenience. Other than ignoring the upgrade suggestion by unchecking the upgrade box each and every time it’s offered, is there anything I can do to get Windows Upgrade to stop suggesting that particular upgrade? I’m hesitant to turn off all Windows Update suggestions, as it may just try to inform me of something really important. Thanks for any help you can provide, and many thanks for your weekly column.

PAUL L.
NICEVILLE, FLA

>> ANSWER: There is indeed a way, Paul. I’m guessing that you are talking about an update notification that keeps appearing in your computer’s notification area, as opposed to an update that you see every time you visit the Windows Update website. Just in case that’s not what you meant, and for the benefit of those readers who prefer the website over the automated updates, I’ll cover how to hide an update under both methods.

To get Windows to stop showing a particular update in the notification area, the next time it appears, simply right-click it, and select “Hide this update.” You can also select “Review Updates” rather than “Install” and Windows Update will display details about the update (or updates) it is about to install. In this window, each update has a checkbox next to it.

Simply uncheck the one you don’t Windows to bug you about anymore, then when you go to the next step, you’ll have the option of whether to be reminded again. Tell it “No.” If for some reason you change your mind in the future and want to see this update (and any other updates you have hidden), all you need to do is right-click on “My Computer” and select “Properties.” Click on the “Automatic Updates” tab, and at the bottom, you’ll see a link that says “Offer updates again that I’ve previously hidden.”

You can also hide updates that you see on the Windows Update website (which you can access in IE by selecting Tools>Windows Update). Use the navigation pane on the left side of the window under “Select by Type” to view the available updates. If you want to hide one, click the little plus sign in front of the update’s title to expand it. At the bottom of the description you’ll see a checkbox labeled “Don’t show this update again.”

As above, if you ever decide you want to see the updates you’ve previously hidden, there is an easy way to do that. In the navigation pane, under “Options” is a link labeled “Restore Hidden Updates.”

How To Turn Off Automatic Reboots in Windows

Windows invariably decides to reboot itself only while you’ve left your computer idling with a big presentation open and unsaved. Reboots typically happen after Windows Update does its thing, often late on Tuesday nights. The easiest way to prevent automatic reboots is to change Windows Update from automatic to manual.

  1. Open the Windows Update control panel.
  2. Click Change settings.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select Never check for updates (not recommended). The other options, including ‘Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them’, sound good in theory but are not as reliable in suppressing autoreboots–and Windows is prone to making changes to your selections without permission.
  4. To keep yourself from forgetting to run Windows Update periodically, set a recurring item in your calendar to check the service every week or two.
  5. You can also address the automatic-reboot problem by way of Windows’ Local Group Policy Editor. Open the editor by typing group policy into the Start menu search box.
  6. Click Edit group policy.
  7. In the left pane of the window, expand the Local Computer Policy, Computer Configuration,Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Update tree.
  8. In the right pane, right-click ‘No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations’ and select Edit.
  9. Change the setting to Enabled and click OK. Do the same for ‘Delay Restart for scheduled installations’ in the previous pane.

You can’t turn off automated restart for scheduled installations completely, but you can increase the delay to a maximum of 30 minutes, giving you more time than the standard default of 5 minutes to save your work.

Other common problems with Windows PCs can also be solved with 5-minute fixes.

Multiprocessors, accelerators big aids on latest ‘Green 500′ list

To be honest, the Green500 list of the world’s greenest supercomputers can sometimes be sort of boring, because IBM is so dominant.

The company actually was behind six of the top 10 computers on the latest edition; a prototype of its next-generation Blue Gene/Q supercomputer wound up on top. It holds more than half of the top 100 positions on the list.

But there are two trends behind the latest list that are worth repeating. First, there has been a design shift. Many of the computers on the list, including the IBM Blue Gene at the top, relied on lost of lower-powered processors to help save energy. The Blue Gene model on the latest edition actually has the same number of processors as the one that made the top of the last ranking. It used slightly more power than that model (40.95 kilowatts). It has a 2097 millions of float-point operations per second (MFLOPS) per watt rating, which is the measure that the Green500 organization uses to assemble the list. That makes it the first supercomputer to exceed the 2000 MFLOPs/watt mark.

The other technology that helped several companies make this particular list: energy-efficient accelerators. The greenest “accelerator-based” supercomputer was the DEGIMA Cluster, at Nagasaki University in Japan. The computer uses AMD/ATI Radeon graphics processing units. Six of the 10 greenest supercomputers in the world use processing accelerators of some sort to complement their lower-powered central processing units.

Said Green500 founder Wu Feng:

“Over the past six months, the average efficiency of measured systems on the Green500 has increased from 230 MFLOPS/W to 256 MFLOPS/W, an improvement of 11 percent. The improvement in efficiency of accelerator-based systems on the Green500 has been even more dramatic, improving 23 percent from 573 MFLOPS/W to 707 MFLOPS/W. 70 percent of the 20 greenest supercomputers are now accelerator-based.”

I doubt many of you reading this list are a candidate for a supercomputer, but design trends have a way of making it down into mainstream data center servers. So watch these themes.
